Character, in WoW Cataclysm, refers to a character Avatar within the game world that is controlled in the third person (note: the option does exist for playing in the first person).  Characters are often referred to as their Avatar or "toon", while character that are controlled by the game are usually called NPC's or Non-Player Characters.
